Grambling State University had its beginnings in 1901 when the Farmer's Relief Association of Ruston, La. authorized Lafayette Richmond, The Reverend Dennis Hollis, and Ruben Daniels to write Booker T. Washington to ask for help in starting a school; in response, Mr. Washington sent Charles P. Adams, a new Tuskegee Institute graduate, to open the school.
